SARAH VAN NIEKERK

b. 1934

Education: Central School of Arts and Crafts; Slade School of Fine Art

Unlike many British wood engravers, Sarah van Niekerk has made a career as a printmaker more than as an illustrator, exhibiting very widely and regularly in large and small galleries up and down the country, though she says it was a commission from Mineral Separation plc. which propelled her back into wood engraving. She has received illustration commissions from Dents, the Folio Society, the Gregynog Press, OUP, Pavilion, Reader's Digest and several other publishers.

In 24 years, since 1976, she has had 15 solo exhibitions, shared another 18 with one other artist and has participated in many group exhibitions, including those of the Twelve Wood Engraver's, a group she pioneered within the Society of Wood Engravers. She was chairman of the Society of Wood Engravers, 1995-98.

Sarah van Niekerk taught wood engraving at the Royal Academy Schools,1976-86, and is tutor at the City and Guilds of London School of Art and West Dean College, as well as at other, occasional workshops. She is a member of the RE, SWE, RWA and Art Workers Guild.
