Primrose Hill Press :: Margaret Tournour

  Margaret Tournour

b. 1921, Sutton, Surrey

In 1939 Margaret Tournour was awarded a scholarship to Croydon School of Art, but the course was cut short due to war-time conditions.

She continued to teach herself while working for the Oxford University Press as a freelance illustrator.

In 1951 she became a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Since her retirement from teaching, many years later, Sister Margaret has worked almost entirely at wood engraving, though she also paints in water-colour and in oils.

She has exhibited at many galleries, including those of Durham University, Newcastle and Gateshead, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gosforth Libraries and at the Queen's Hall, Hexham, Shipley and Woodhorn Colliery Museums and with the National Trust.

Her work has accompanied Six Poems and Twelve Poems by David Burnett (Tragara and Old School Presses), and featured in Bible Trees and Bible Birds (Black Cygnet Press). For twenty-five years she lived in Northumberland, but in June 1998 moved to Cosham near Portsmouth
