  Hilary Paynter
HILARY PAYNTER

b. 1943 Dunfermline, Scotland

Education: Portsmouth College of Art, 1959-64, NDD in Sculpture and Wood Engraving (teacher: Gerry Tucker); University of London

Hilary Paynter's working life began with art teaching but developed through an interest in challenging and deviant behaviour which led eventually to her training as a Chartered Educational Pyschologist.

Her career in education ran parallel to that in wood engraving for 35 years. A crammed life dictated an urgent approach to wood engraving as well as extremely tight organisation.

Hilary Paynter was instrumental in the re-forming of the Society of Wood Engravers in 1984 and has been its lynchpin ever since, first as Honorary Secretary and latterly as Chairman.

Her engravings are in the collection of the Ashmolean, Fitzwilliam and Victoria and Albert Museums and of city galleries such as Birmingham, Hereford and Portsmouth.

Recent publications include Fragments for the Satyricon by Petronius. She had a major solo retrospective at Hereford City Art Gallery in 1992.
