SIMON BRETT

b. 1943, Windsor

Education: Saint Martin's School of Art, London, 1960-1964

Simon Brett learned engraving from Clifford Webb at Saint Martin's, lived as a painter for a while in New Mexico and Provence and taught for eighteen years at Marlborough College in Wiltshire.

In 1981 his first book illustrations won a Francis Williams Illustration Award. He has illustrated nearly forty books since then, many of them for the Folio Society or for private presses.

He has had few exhibitions and can offer no list of collections where his work may be found, except the Royal Collection at Windsor, for in 1998 he was commissioned to make a presentation print for the Golden Wedding of the Queen and Prince Philip.

He has aspirations to be a printmaker but making a living is a more immediate demand. Two monographs have been published on his bookplates; he has made over a hundred.

He was Chairman of the Society of Wood Engravers 1982- 92, and continues to be closely involved with the society and has written essays and books on the subject of wood engraving.
